Activ eBook Compiler (Information as of May 2008) Activ eBook Compiler is our company's (Answers 2000 Limited's) software for creating eBooks. The software itself runs on Microsoft Windows, and the eBooks that it creates are intended for use with, and compatible with Microsoft Windows computers. All recent (and some not so recent) versions of Microsoft Windows are supported including Windows XP and Windows Vista. The basic idea behind that program is that a compiles a set of HTML files into a self-contained Windows program (an EXE file). No separate viewing program is therefore required - the user simply downloads the eBook and can run it directly from their PC. The pages within the eBook are shown in a browser-like environment, and can incorporate similar types of features to those that you might see in web pages, such as formatting, graphics, animations, and even scripting and HTML forms. The software also incorporates a number of features that authors can use to customize and enhance the appearance and functionality of their eBooks. Authors can choose their own icon for the book, enable searching across the entire ebook, customize the toolbar, choose whether to display a menu and status bar and more. It is also possible to customize pretty much all the messages and dialog box text within eBooks (at least to languages using the European Latin alphabet), and hence make fully translated French, German, Italian, Spanish language eBooks. Other features of the software include an option to create rebrandable eBooks (this for example can be used to allow resellers to incorporate their own name or links within your eBook), and a password protection system that can be used to limit unauthorized sharing of for-sale eBooks. Authors who prefer not to bother with passwords, but still want a security system for their eBooks also have the option of using a compatible third party product (such as Hyprlock or Virtual Vault) instead of the standard password feature.
